Privacy Policy
Last updated: 21 September 2026
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how HOP (“HOP,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects personal data when you use the HOP websites, apps, waitlist, and related services (the “Services”).
It should be read together with our Terms of Use. By using the Services, you acknowledge this Policy. Where consent is required by law, we will ask for it.
2. Who this Policy covers
This Policy applies to:
- Riders who request transportation;
- Drivers who offer trips through the platform;
- Senders and recipients involved in courier deliveries;
- Waitlist and website visitors, including people who submit an email and role interest before launch; and
- People who contact support or otherwise interact with HOP.
3. Data we collect
Depending on how you use HOP, we may collect:
- Identity and contact data — name, phone number, email, profile photo, government ID or licence details (especially for drivers), date of birth where required.
- Account and preference data — login credentials (stored in hashed or tokenised form where applicable), language, saved places, accessibility preferences.
- Location data — precise or approximate GPS location before, during, and shortly after trips or deliveries (to match users, navigate, price, support safety features, and resolve disputes). You can control location permissions in your device settings; some features will not work without it.
- Trip and delivery data — pickup and drop-off, route, distance, duration, fare breakdown, vehicle and driver identifiers, package metadata you provide, ratings, and tips.
- Payment data — payment method tokens, transaction amounts, and billing status processed by our payment partners. We typically do not store full card numbers on HOP servers.
- Device and usage data — device model, OS, app version, IP address, crash logs, diagnostics, and how you interact with the Services.
- Communications — in-app messages related to a trip, support tickets, emails, and call recordings where permitted and disclosed.
- Background and safety checks — for drivers, results from screening providers, licence and vehicle document verification, and insurance status, as allowed by law.
- Waitlist data — email address, selected role (drive / ride / send), and submission source or timestamp.
We may also receive data from payment processors, map and messaging providers, fraud-prevention partners, app stores, and public sources where lawful.
4. How we use data
We use personal data to:
- Provide, operate, and improve ride-hailing and courier matching, routing, pricing, and payouts;
- Create and secure accounts, and authenticate users;
- Process payments, refunds, promotions, and receipts;
- Support safety features (for example trip sharing, emergency assistance workflows, and misuse detection);
- Communicate service updates, and — with consent or as otherwise allowed — marketing about HOP;
- Manage the waitlist and notify you when Services open in your area;
- Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, spam, and policy violations;
- Comply with law, respond to lawful requests, and establish or defend legal claims;
- Analyse aggregated or de-identified trends to improve the network.
5. Legal bases (where applicable)
Where required (for example under the Nigeria Data Protection Act / NDPR framework or similar laws), we process data based on: performance of a contract; legitimate interests that are not overridden by your rights (such as securing the platform and improving matching); compliance with legal obligations; and consent where we ask for it (such as certain marketing or precise location uses beyond what is necessary to provide a requested trip).
6. How we share data
We may share personal data with:
- Other users on a trip or delivery — for example, a rider’s first name and pickup pin with the assigned driver; a driver’s name, photo, vehicle details, and live location with the rider during an active trip; limited sender/recipient details for courier handoff.
- Service providers — hosting, analytics, customer support, SMS/email, maps, payments, identity verification, and cloud infrastructure, under contractual confidentiality and security obligations.
- Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate safeguards.
- Legal and safety — regulators, law enforcement, or other parties when required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of HOP, our users, or the public.
We do not sell your personal data for money. We do not share waitlist emails with unrelated third parties for their own marketing.
7. Location data in more detail
Location is core to ride-hailing and courier. While a trip or delivery is active, we collect and share location as needed to complete the job and support safety. We may retain trip path data for a limited period for receipts, support, fraud prevention, and regulatory reasons. You can revoke location permission in your device settings; doing so may prevent new requests.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
Our websites may use cookies, local storage, and similar technologies for authentication, preferences (including theme), security, and analytics. You can control cookies through your browser; some site features may not function if they are blocked.
9. Retention
We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purposes above, including to meet legal, accounting, and reporting requirements. Trip records, payment records, and driver compliance documents may be kept longer where law or dispute handling requires. Waitlist data is kept until we have notified you of launch (or you ask us to delete it), unless we must retain it longer for compliance.
10. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organisational measures designed to protect personal data (including encryption in transit, access controls, and monitoring). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You may also withdraw consent where processing is consent-based, without affecting prior lawful processing.
To exercise rights, contact privacy@hop.app. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
12. Children
The Services are not directed to children under 18 (or the higher age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children for account creation. If you believe a child has provided data, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
13. International transfers
HOP may process and store data on servers in Lagos, Nigeria and in other countries where our providers operate. Where we transfer data across borders, we take steps designed to provide appropriate safeguards as required by applicable law.
14. Third-party links and SDKs
The Services may link to third-party sites or embed SDKs (maps, payments, crash reporting). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. We encourage you to review them.
15. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version with a new “Last updated” date and, when changes are material, provide additional notice as required by law.
